It took me a while to get some games running, particularly to get Neverwinter Nights 2 not to crash all of the time, and only some of the time as it seems to be designed to do! But it works pretty well now. It’s a shame I can’t run the client extension, but oh well.
Steam Play seems to be an absolute blessing for Linux desktop users who also want to game. I’ve been playing a lot of Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous, and haven’t noticed any differences from my experience on Windows yet. Just slapped Mephistopheles back to hell, put on his robe and grew a pair of blue wings. I have no words for some of the things they put in this game.
From what I’ve read on WineHQ, League of Legends supposedly doesn’t run very well if at all on Wine. However, yesterday I opened up Lutris, chose an install script to fetch and run and there it is, running well with the exception that when I come out of a game, it gets very slow to the point where I’m not sure if anything is ever going to happen, so I crash it. So while the game itself runs pretty well, that inconvenience doesn’t lend itself well to repeated matches, certainly not with friends having to wait.
Updating from Linux Mint Cinnamon 21.1 to 21.2 everything works except… and this is weird, Steam won’t launch from the menu. The exact same command from a terminal window that I open first does run as expected. But it runs, and I’m stubborn enough to not mind too much. While this has been a much smoother experience than the last time I ran a Linux desktop on my personal computer, I still think you have to have at least a little Stockholm syndrome to be fully on board.
